    1. A loyal supporter, especially of a sovereign or an established government.
    2. In N Ireland: a protestant who is in favour of continuing their country's parliamentary union with Great Britain, as opposed to someone who advocates the union of N Ireland and Eire. See also Unionist.

    3. During the American War of Independence: an American who was in favour of continuing the US's links with Great Britain. Compare Republican.
