      A religious ceremony in which the sovereign washed the feet of the poor, in commemoration of Christ's washing of the disciples' feet, and distributed food, clothing and money (a tradition that remains only in the form of the ceremonial distribution of Maundy money).
Etymology: 13c: from French mandé, from Latin mandatum command, taken from Christ's command in John 23.34.
