    1. In the UK: a nationwide lottery, established in 1994, in which players choose six numbers between 1 and 49 and pay £1 for each chosen set. The lottery is run by a private company and a small proportion of the profits are set aside in a fund for the arts, sports, charitable organizations, etc.
