The commonest type of volcanic glass, usually black, but sometimes red or brown in colour, formed by the rapid cooling and solidification of granite magma.

Etymology: 17c: from Latin obsidianus, an erroneous form of (lapis) obsianus, a stone supposedly found by one Obsius in Ethiopia.
