    1. Said of a peripheral device, eg a printer: not connected to the central processing unit, and therefore not controlled by it.
    2. Said of a peripheral device, eg a printer: not connected; switched off. Also as adverb. Compare on-line.
      Example: went off line at 2 o'clock
