    1. pathol.
      A human disease, common in tropical regions of America and Asia, caused by infestation by a filarial worm that is transmited by various species of blackfly, and characterized by subcutaneous nodules and often blindness. Also called river blindness.
Etymology: Early 20c: Latin, from Greek onkos a hook or barb + kerkos a tail.
