    1. geol.
      A milky-white, black or coloured form of silica, combined with variable amounts of water, usually with a characteristic internal ‘play' of coloured flashes caused by light reflected from different layers within the stone. They are used as gemstones.
Etymology: 16c: from French opale or Latin opalus, perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit upala precious stone.
