    1. Any of a family of brightly coloured songbirds native to the forests of Europe, Asia and Africa, especially the golden oriole, native to Europe, so called because of the male's bright yellow and black plumage.
    2. Any of a separate family of songbirds, native to the New World, typically with mainly black plumage with brightly coloured patterns.
Etymology: 18c: from Latin oriolus, from aureolus, from aurum gold.
