      (formula O3) a toxic pungent unstable bluish gas that is an allotrope of oxygen, and at ground level may be a pollutant (photochemical smog). Ozone is formed when ultraviolet light or an electric spark acts on oxygen, and is a strong oxidizing agent, used in controlled quantities for bleaching, sterilizing water and purifying air, etc.
