    1. A large rat-like nocturnal rodent, native to Central and S America, with a brown or black coat marked with four rows of white spots running along its flanks, a very short tail, and large cheek bones which form the outer walls of huge cheek pouches.
Etymology: 17c: Portuguese and Spanish, from Tupí.
