    1. An apartment, especially a luxuriously appointed one, built on to the roof of a tall building. Also as adj.
      Example: penthouse suite
    2. real tennis.
      A roofed corridor running along three sides of the court.
Etymology: 1920s in sense 1; 14c, meaning ‘annex' or ‘outhouse', from earlier pentice: from French appentis, from Latin appendicium appendage.
