    1. A special projector by means of which the positions and movements of stars and planets can be projected on to a hemispherical domed ceiling in order to simulate the appearance of the night sky to an audience seated below.
    2. The building that houses such a projector.
Etymology: 1920s in these senses; 18c referring to an orrery: from Latin planetarius planetary.
