    1. Any of several lines painted round a ship's hull showing, for different conditions, the depth to which it may be safely and legally immersed when loaded.
Etymology: 19c: these lines were required by the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876, put forward by Samuel Plimsoll (1824‐98).
