    1. Any of a number of flat-bottomed craft, punts, barges, etc, anchored side by side across a river, to support a temporary bridge or platform, etc by providing buoyancy in the water.
Etymology: 17c: from French ponton, from Latin ponto a punt, from pons a bridge.

noun
    1. cards.
      A game in which the object is to collect sets of cards that add up to or close to 21, without going over that total. Also called twenty-one, vingt-et-un.
Etymology: Early 20c: a corruption of French vingt-et-un twenty-one.
