      One of the two divisions of psychiatric disorders, characterized by a loss of contact with reality, in the form of delusions or hallucinations and belief that only one's own actions are rational. Compare neurosis.
Etymology: 19c: from Greek, meaning ‘animation', taken in modern use to mean ‘condition of the psyche'.
