      1. In England and Wales: a senior barrister who is recommended for appointment as Counsel to the Crown by the Lord Chancellor and who is allowed to sit within the bar and to wear silk gowns.
      2. In Scotland: a senior advocate who is recommended for appointment as Counsel to the Crown by the Lord President and who has these same privileges. Also called silk.
