    1. medicine.
      A disease mainly affecting children and young adults, caused by a streptocccal bacterium that initially destroys blood cells. This can then lead to fever, arthritis that spreads from one joint to another, involuntary movements (Sydenham's chorea), skin disorders and inflammation of the heart valves which may cause permanent damage or lead to heart failure.
