    1. A disease characterized by painful swelling of the joints (eg of the hips, knees, fingers, etc) and muscles, and which causes stiffness and pain when moving them.
Etymology: 17c: from Latin rheumatismus, from Greek rheumatismos, from rheuma flow or rheum.
