    1. biochem.
      The light-sensitive pigment found in rod cells in the retina of the vertebrate eye which, on exposure to light, is chemically converted to its components, opsin and retinal, which stimulate the production of a nerve impulse to allow vision, particularly in dim light (night vision). Also called visual purple.
Etymology: 19c: from rhodo- + Greek opsis sight + -in.
