    1. Any of various perennial plants, native to Central America, which have a rosette of swollen stout sword-like leaves tipped with sharp spines.
    2. The strong coarse durable yellowish fibre obtained from the leaves of this plant, used to make ropes, twine, brush bristles, sacking, matting, etc.
Etymology: 19c: named after Sisal, the port in Yucatan in Mexico from where it was first exported.
