    1. Any of several different varieties of grass, such as durra, that are related to the sugar cane and which are widely cultivated in Africa and parts of Asia as a cereal crop and a source of syrup.

    2. A type of molasses that is made from the syrup of one of these varieties of plant.
Etymology: 16c: from Italian sorgo, from Latin surgum.
