    1. A bright-green beetle.
    2. A preparation made from the dried bodies of these beetles, which was formerly used for raising blisters and which was also believed to have aphrodisiac qualities. Also called cantharides.
Etymology: 15c: so called because they are particularly abundant in Spain.
