    1. A tropical disease of unknown cause that affects the digestive tract and which is characterized by a sore tongue, severe diarrhoea, voluminous frothy stools, weight loss, anaemia and oedema.
Etymology: Early 19c: from Dutch spruw, from German Spruwe tumour.
