    1. A mixture of saliva, mucus and/or pus that is coughed up from the bronchial passages, and is indicative of an inflammatory disorder, especially in smoking-related conditions and other pulmonary conditions such as bronchitis, etc. Also called phlegm.
Etymology: 17c: Latin, meaning ‘spit', from spuere, sputum to spit.
