    1. bot.
      A stem that grows horizontally out of the base of certain plants and which has a node or nodes that can root and form new independent plants. Also called runner.
    2. zool.
      A tubular outgrowth that is found in certain lower animals, eg in hydroid colonies, from which new individuals can arise.
Etymology: 17c: from Latin stolo a sucker of a plant.
