    1a. A hard pointed device, usually made from diamond or sapphire, at the tip of the needle-like part of the cartridge at the end of the arm of a record-player, which picks up the sound from the record's grooves;
    1b. A similar device for recording information given out by electrocardiographs, seismographs, etc;
    1c. The cutting tool that is used to produce the grooves in a record.
