    1. A traditional Japanese dish which consists of vegetables, noodles and very thin strips of meat, usually beef, which are all sautéed together at the table, after which a sweet soy sauce is added.
Etymology: 1920s: Japanese, meaning ‘grilled on a ploughshare' from the time when the people were forbidden to eat meat but continued to do so, secretly cooking strips of game outside using this quick method.
