    1. In Freudian theory: that aspect of the psyche where someone's individual moral standards are internalized, especially parental and social ones that act as a censor on the ego. It is associated with self-criticism and self-observation, often operating at an unconscious level, and it can be at odds with the person's conscious values. Compare id.
