    1. Any soluble substance, such as a detergent, wetting agent, emulsifier, foaming agent, etc, that reduces the surface tension of a liquid, or reduces the surface tension between two liquids or between a solid and a liquid.
    2. zool.
      A substance secreted by the cells lining the alveoli of the lungs that prevents the walls of the alveoli from sticking together and the lungs from collapsing.
