    1. biol.
      The change of direction of an organism, especially a plant or plant part, in response to an external stimulus such as gravity, light or heat: plant roots grow vertically downward in response to gravity (positive geotropism) and they grow away from the light (negative phototropism), whereas shoots grow towards the light (positive phototropism) and away from the soil (negative geotropism).
Etymology: 19c: from Greek tropos a turn.
