    1. A pacifist Christian movement that was founded by George Fox in the 17c and whose members are often called Quakers. Fox stressed the importance of simplicity in all things and rejected the sacraments, formal doctrine and ordained ministry. Many 19c Quaker industrialists were noted for their philanthropic attitudes towards their workers. Often shortened to Society of Friends.
