    1. A small metal, ceramic or plastic cap worn on the finger to protect it and push the needle when sewing.
    2. A metal ring with a concave groove on the outside, fitted into a loop formed by splicing a rope in order to prevent chafing.
Etymology: Anglo-Saxon thymel originally meaning ‘a covering for the thumb'.
