    1. The twice-daily rise and fall of the water level in the oceans and seas, caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and especially the Moon. See also neap tide, spring tide.
    2. The level of the water, especially the sea, as affected by this.
      Example: high tide
    3. A sudden or marked trend.
      Example: the tide of public opinion
