- 1. A system of betting in which the total amount staked, minus tax, etc, is paid out to the winners in proportion to the size of their stake.
2. An automatic machine which records any bets made using this system and works out pay-outs and odds, etc. Often shortened to Tote. Also called pari-mutuel.
