      (symbol W, atomic number 74) a very hard silvery-white metallic element that occurs naturally in scheelite and is notable for its very high melting point. It is used in the manufacture of filaments of electric light bulbs, X-ray tubes and TV sets and in steel alloys that are used in turbine blades and cutting tools. Also called wolfram.
Etymology: 18c: Swedish, from tung heavy + sten stone.
