    1. A small device used for tuning musical instruments and testing acoustics, etc, consisting of a stem with two prongs at the top which, when made to vibrate, produce a specified musical note.
Etymology: 18c: invented in 1711 by the English trumpeter John Shore (c.1662‐1752).
