    1. The largest flesh-eating dinosaur, which reached a height of around 6m and a length of about 15m and lived during the Cretaceous period on a diet that consisted mainly of herbivorous dinosaurs. It walked on its hind legs which had powerful claws for killing its prey, and had relatively small and ineffectual front legs.
Etymology: Early 20c: from Greek tyrannos tyrant + sauros lizard, modelled on dinosaur.
