- 1. Sound consisting of waves with frequencies higher than 20000Hz, and therefore above the upper limit of normal human hearing. It is widely used in medical diagnosis (especially during pregnancy when X-rays would be damaging), in sonar systems, for cleaning industrial tools, and for detecting flaws and impurities in metals.
