- 1. A long flexible tube-like organ by which a fetus is attached to the placenta and through which it receives nourishment.
2. Any cable, tube, servicing line, etc through which essential supplies are conveyed, eg that attached to a rocket vehicle or spacecraft during preparations for its launch, or the lifeline that connects astronauts to their spacecrafts during a spacewalk.
