    (Brit)
    1. A sign made by raising the first two fingers and clasping the other fingers and the thumb in against the palm, an expression of victory with the palm turned outwards or an offensive gesture of contempt with the palm inwards.
Etymology: 1940s: meaning ‘victory sign', first used in July 1941 by Victor de Lavelaye, working for the Belgium section of the BBC, to indicate no surrender, and particularly used to signify victory at the end of World War II.
