    1a. Any device that regulates the flow of a liquid or gas through a pipe by opening or closing an aperture;
    1b. Any such device that allows flow in one direction only.
    2. anatomy.
      In certain tubular organs: a flap of membranous tissue that allows flow of a body fluid, such as blood, in one direction only, eg the valves in the heart and veins.
    3. electronics.4. Any of a set of finger-operated devices that control the flow of air through some brass musical instruments producing different notes.
    5. bot.
      Any of the sections that are formed when a capsule or other dry fruit opens to shed its seeds at dehiscence.
    6. zool.
      Either half of the hinged shell of a bivalve mollusc such as a cockle or clam.
