Etymology: 16c: Latin, from the name Veronica.

Etymology: 1920s in sense 2; 18c in sense 1: from the name of St Veronica, on whose handkerchief an impression of Christ's face is believed to have miraculously appeared after His face was wiped with it on His way to Calvary.
